The Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit

Welcome to the Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit (PDRU). The PDRU provides specialist multidisciplinary rehabilitation services to patients with complex physical, cognitive and communication difficulties, resulting typically from a neurological disorder. Neurological disorders are illnesses or injuries related to the structure and function of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Rehabilitation involves working closely with members of the multidisciplinary team to identify specific, realistic and achievable goals that will significantly improve an individual’s mobility, functioning and quality of life.

The PDRU is a semi-regional service, receiving community and inpatient referrals from hospital sites across NHS GG&C, NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Highlands.

The interdisciplinary team at the PDRU provide a range of services, including:

  • Specialist interdisciplinary assessment of an individual’s rehabilitation needs (either as an inpatient or at an outpatient clinic)
  • Consultation, signposting and advice regarding appropriate treatment
  • Person-centred rehabilitation using an evidence-based goal setting approach
    • Inpatient stay (typically 4-6 weeks)
    • Day case rehabilitation programme (4 week duration)
  • Spasticity management (either as an inpatient or outpatient)

Our interdisciplinary team consists of the following professionals:

  • Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Speciality & Junior Doctors
  • Rehabilitation Nurses
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Speech & Language Therapists
  • Clinical Neuropsychologist
  • Therapy Assistants
  • Auxillary Nurses

We also have access to Dieticians, Podiatrists and Orthotists.

We work in close collaboration with Neurology & Neurosurgery within NHS GG&C and also with other specialist Rehabilitation services, both in NHS GG&C (e.g. WestMARC, Spinal Injuries, Stroke Rehabilitation Services and Community Rehabilitation Teams) as well as rehabilitation services located in other Health Boards. We also regularly work closely with Social Work and Advocacy Services.
